When I was pregnant for the first time back in 1986, I read the book “What to Expect When You’re Expecting.” I followed it religiously throughout my pregnancy, since many of the problems and symptoms I was experiencing seemed to happen “right on cue” and there was no one I could talk to, being the first of my friends to become pregnant, and having the first baby in the family in over 20 years. All I had were granny tales and horror stories.
So when I saw this book and I heard that it was supposed to be set up in the same style, I was eager to give it a read. I am sorry, but I have to say that I had a hard time reading it straight through. I found it to be redundant, and a bit insulting to my intelligence. At this point in life I do not appreciate a book that “speaks” to me like I am some sort of idiot. Most women approaching their menopause years are more knowledgeable about their bodies than they may have been during the pregnancy years.
The question and answer sections in every chapter are a bit much – I mean, do people really ask such silly questions, or is it just filler? There is also a lot of general health information that, in my opinion, is something I would look for elsewhere – not the reason I bough the book.
There is some useful information in this book, but you have to seek it out between the pictures and fluff. If you are looking for a quick look-up guide, this book will suffice for the basics, but if you are looking for a good cover-to-cover in-depth read, keep looking. When I find one, I’ll be sure to share.
